Graceland London

British, b. 1992

Graceland London studied Fine Art and History of Art at Hampstead Fine Arts College, where she developed a deep interest in the Italian Renaissance and 15th-century Flemish painting—influences that continue to shape her work. After completing her BA, she pursued 3D Digital Design and Animation at Greenwich University. This pivotal experience helped define her practice, leading her to create characters and motifs, such as the ‘squeegee’: a melancholic, stubbled figure that symbolises the destructive aspects of the ego and shadow.

Graceland London’s paintings are defined by her use of acrylic paint, which emphasises flat, two-dimensional surfaces, while oil paint is employed for pockets of detail, which are rendered with intricate shading and consideration of light’s effect on textural surfaces. She has also ventured into digital art, including NFTs, where she applies her signature style—bold outlines, colour blocks, and simplified representation—through digital painting on an iPad. This seamless integration of traditional and digital mediums is a key feature of her evolving practice.

Graceland London populates her canvases with a wide range of objects, characters, and phrases, often full of social and cultural references that provoke thought and stimulate the viewer’s imagination. Drawing inspiration from old master painters like Jan van Eyck, Luca Signorelli, and Hieronymus Bosch, her compositions are filled with rich details and complex visual worlds. A consistent theme in her work is a critique of contemporary Western culture, with references to modern social and economic issues. She often incorporates symbols like iconic fashion logos, Donald Trump rubber ducks, and references to QAnon. One particularly poignant motif is the fried egg, which Graceland London reimagines as a symbol of disillusionment, subverting its traditional use as a symbol of optimism and new life.

Graceland London has exhibited widely, with significant shows at Art Basel Miami in 2019 and Art Basel in Switzerland in 2023. In 2024, she joined 群交AV Gallery, marking her first solo show, Spotlight on the Shadows, which focused on her pop-horror works that explore the human condition. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue featuring essays by Elise Bell and Alastair Smart. Most recently, her work has been included in 群交AV’s group show Sacred and Profane (2025), which seeks to examine how contemporary artists engage with art history and religious iconography to address modern issues.
